CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — For the second-straight year, the Lugo family is hosting a haunted maze at their Chesterfield County home. But this year they decided to turn the event into a fundraiser for a family friend.
This past summer, Justin Bennett was on vacation in the Outer Banks when he dove into the water and hit a sandbar, breaking his neck. For the past few months, he’s been recovering, unable to walk.
“Shock was probably the first thing to hit me and then I was upset,” Lisa Lugo recalled.
Lisa Lugo has worked with Justin for the past 8 years at Sima Financial in Richmond.
“He is very funny,” she said. “He likes to play tricks on people, very outgoing, very strong and determined young man.”
Her husband suggested turning this year’s haunted maze into a fundraiser to help pay for out of pocket medical costs.
“All this is to help him out and make the community aware that this could happen to anybody,” said Lugo.
Lugo, a mother of three boys, says she can only imagine what Bennett’s mother is going through.
“He could simply be one of my children so it hits me close to home.”
The maze will cost $10 per family on Friday and Saturday. The big event will on Saturday. The Lugos will serve food at $5 per plate and show a movie showing Justin’s progress.
“It’s a blessing to have people come together for a good cause. It’s to help Justin on his journey and to try and alleviate some of the burden,” Lugo said.
If you can’t make it to this weekend’s haunted maze but would still like to help, Justin’s friends have set up a GoFundMe account where you can donate.
