#8SportsBlitz Rivalry of the Week: Freeman vs. Godwin

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Douglas Freeman Rebels and Mills Godwin Eagles are natural rivals. Godwin opened in 1980 and drew from Freeman, which opened in 1954. Once the school on Pump Road opened, the Rebels’ football program took a major hit. It’s easy to look back at history and divide Freeman football into two eras: before Godwin and after Godwin.

When the two met during the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, the Eagles usually came out on top. That has changed, recently, however. The Rebels (8-0 and ranked #6 in our Top 10) have won the last three meetings in a row.

The game is huge for Godwin, as well. A win could propel the Eagles into the 5A playoffs, while a loss may eliminate them. Most Godwin kids now view Deep Run as their rival, but the importance of the game based on its playoff implications is not lost on the Eagles.

The game takes place Friday night at 7:00 PM at Mills Godwin, and you can see highlights on the #8SportsBlitz at 11.
