McAuliffe responds to scrutiny over PAC donation to FBI official’s wife

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The political action committee of Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe donated nearly $500,000 to the wife an official at the FBI who later helped with the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email use.

The Wall Street Journal reports campaign finance records show the governor’s political action committee donated the money to the 2015 state Senate campaign of Dr. Jill McCabe.

Dr. McCabe is the wife of the now deputy director of the FBI Andrew McCabe.

McAuliffe says what he did was common practice and was just trying to get the best candidate elected.

“I think we’re in silly season now today. I’m almost embarrassed of the article if you read the whole article. I supported Jill McCabe because she was the best candidate to be a state Senator plain and simple,” McAuliffe said.

Democratic party officials say the governor and other party leaders recruited Dr. McCabe to run.
