Dominion Power warning community of new utility scam

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Dominion Power is warning the community about a new utility scam targeting customers.

Dominion tells 8News the latest scam is an email, followed by a phone call, that threatens disconnection if payment is not immediately received.

The scammer claims that due to a computer glitch, Dominion Virginia Power was unable to warn customers of pending disconnections due to non-payment; however, an immediate payment using cash or a pre-paid card can ensure service is not interrupted.

There are two ways to know it’s a scam:

  • Dominion never demands immediate payment.  We will notify customers in writing multiple times prior to disconnection and offer help with payment plans before disconnections.
  • Dominion offers a variety of convenient payment methods.  Scammers insist on a specific type of payment, such as cash or a pre-paid card.
