UVA coaches speak about hazing allegations and lawsuit

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — UVA football coaches are speaking for the first time after a former football player filed a lawsuit saying he was bullied and hazed.

Aidan Howard claims he was forced to wrestle in the nude and fight another student with nearly 100 people watching.

He suffered a concussion and a broken orbital bone in the alleged incident.

Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall is standing with his team through the investigation.

“We have a principal that goes really deep and that’s family first, last and always. And they’re acting like that and I think as coaches, we act like that,” Mendenhall said. “And that’s really all I’ll say until the investigation is over.”

Offensive Coordinator Robert Anae also spoke about the allegations.

“In the American system, you’re presumed innocent until proven,” Anae said. “So that’s my take on the American system. Those were allegations and you know, right now, we’re just gonna leave them at that.”
