Man suffers gunshot wound and crashes vehicle into southside Richmond yard

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A driver is in the hospital in Richmond this morning after crashing his car into a tree and several mailboxes overnight.

Police say the man was hospitalized due to a gunshot wound he suffered prior to the crash.

The car came to rest in someone’s front yard on Walmsley Boulevard at Branchwood Drive.

Rocky Sun was just sitting on his front porch when he heard what he described as crunching metal.

When he looked down the street to see what happened, he was shocked by what he saw.

“There were no breaks of anything,” said Rocky Sun. “So I automatically thought somebody is injured and has lost control.”
Sun said police arrived on scene pretty quickly… But he knew it wasn’t just a normal car crash…

He said he saw officers collecting evidence and that’s when he connected the crash to what he had heard earlier.

Prior to that, I heard gunshots, muffled gun shots, probably about four of them,” said Sun. “It couldn’t be no more than three for four minutes later, and I hear the mangling sound of this crash and metal.”

Police explained that the driver hit a small tree, dragging it with the car and hitting several mailboxes along the way before coming to a stop.

Though the man’s injury is considered life-threatening, police believe he will recover.
