Driver who crashed through wrought iron fence in front of State Capitol charged with DUI

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The driver who drove through the State Capitol grounds fence on Friday has been charged in connection with the incident.

Carl Jackson, 55, of Petersburg was charged with failing to maintain his lane and driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

He is scheduled to appear in Richmond General District Court at 9 a.m. Monday.

The charges stem from an incident where Jackson ripped through the wrought iron fence in front of the State Capitol early Friday morning.

Capitol Police said that Jackson was traveling on Franklin Street around 3:15 a.m., tried turning onto 9th Street, then drove over the curb and into the wrought iron fence.

Both Jackson and a passenger were transported to the hospital.

The crash is scene is taped off but Capitol Police said the Capitol will be open.
