BRADENTON, FL (WFLA) – When Elisha Griggs leaves her apartment, you can bet her 1-year-old Pomeranian, named Onyx, is right by her side.
Onyx either travels in a dog purse – or in Griggs’ arms.
On Friday morning at a Bradenton McDonald’s Griggs ordered a drink at the counter. That’s when said a manager gave her a message.
“They told me, ‘No pets.’ I said, ‘She’s not a pet. She’s a service dog.’ They asked me if I had paperwork for her. I said, ‘Yes,’” Griggs explained to WFLA.
Griggs retrieved a doctor’s note from her car. At this point, she said, things got nasty.
“They told me that the paperwork basically wasn’t good enough and they wanted to know what my disability was,” she said.
Griggs called the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. A deputy told her McDonald’s had to let her in.
“I did go back and I got a drink just to kind of to prove a point,” she said.
A McDonald’s representative said it wasn’t obvious Griggs’ dog is a service dog. The representative said Onyx had nothing to show she is a service dog. This incident was a misunderstanding, the representative said.
The company issued a statement saying, “We welcome customers to our restaurant with service animals. We have reached out to the customer to resolve the issue.”
Griggs isn’t looking for money or food coupons. She did receive a phone call.
“Honestly, I would like a real apology from her. I kind of felt like that’s kind of owed to me,” Griggs said.
