Health department investigating Smithfield Foods after worker contracts tuberculosis

ISLE OF WHITE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The health department is investigating Smithfield Foods in Isle of White County after a worker there contracted tuberculosis.

Officials are looking into who may have come into close contact with that person and could be infected.

Tuberculosis usually attacks the lungs but can also attack the kidney, spine and brain. If not treated, it can be deadly.

Because tuberculosis is spread through the air and not food, there is no risk of food contamination.
