The 8News Pigskin Picks: Week 6

WRIC-8-News-Pigskin-Picks-1200x650

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – The standings have shuffled once again …

It remains a crowded race at the top — except for Chip, whose “dumpster fire” of a season continued with a 2-6 finish last week — but we have new co-leaders this week in Mitch Carr, who went a perfect 8-0 last week, and Robb Crocker, whose 7-1 finish pulled him even with Mitch at 26-14 on the season.

Ron Carthen (25-15) is just one game back, though, while Will Armbruster and Kerri O’Brien are locked in a tie for third at 24-16.

Here’s the gang’s picks for this week and, as always, feel free to play along at home.

ronRon Carthen, 8News Editor & Vlogger (Last week – 5-3, Overall – 25-15)

Manchester at Hermitage

Pick: Manchester

If it was last year’s Panthers team I would have gone Hermitage but something amazing is happening to the Lancers and they will remain undefeated.

Alabama at Tennessee

Pick: Alabama

The Crimson Tide pass rush will be all over Joshua Dobbs and the Vols O-line. Jalen Hurts won’t make many mistakes but Derek Barnett will be after him.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Syracuse

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

The Hokies will certainly win 4 in a row and thankfully indoors unlike that awful weather from Hurricane Matthew at UNC last week

Ole Miss @ Arkansas

Pick: Ole Miss

The Rebels have lost two straight meetings to the Razorbacks. It will be a close one but I think they will win this one on the road coming off a bye.

Ohio State at Wisconsin

Pick: Ohio State

Great Big Ten game with two good defenses but I think the Buckeyes D is too athletic for the Badgers offense and J.T. Barrett will score enough to put this game away.

Pitt at Virginia

Pick: Virginia

I actually think the Cavaliers can pull off the upset at home against James Connor and the Panthers this week

Villanova at Richmond

Pick: Richmond

Can’t wait to see Josh Norman line up against Steve Smith. It will be close but I see Baltimore finding a way to win this one and not lose back-to-back home games.

Eagles at Redskins

Pick: Eagles

Tough loss for the Eagles against the Lions last week but I will take Philly over Washington but which QB will make fewer mistakes and my money is on Carson Wentz. Redskins have won the last 3 meetings and Philly is due.

Kerri webKerri O’Brien, 8News Investigative Reporter (Last week – 4-4, Overall – 24-16)

Manchester at Hermitage

Pick: Manchester

Better ranking, more experienced players, I go with the Lancers.

Alabama at Tennessee

Pick: Alabama

The talent, good coaching and experience just makes Bama the clear winner here. I know Tennessee has been looking ahead to this game and will want to rally after last week’s loss but running the ball against the Alabama D….fuggedaboutit. (Remember, I’m from Jersey)

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Syracuse

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

The Hokies outshine the Cuse in offense, defense and coaching. Plus, Syracuse was a mess last week with costly tunovers. Go Hokies.

Ole Miss @ Arkansas

Pick: Ole Miss

The Rebels have lost two straight meetings to the Razorbacks. It will be a close one but I think they will win this one on the road coming off a bye.

Ohio State at Wisconsin

Pick: Ohio State

I think the 5-0 Buckeyes stay undefeated. I love the JT Barrett/ Curtis Samuel duo on this team. I may even don my Ohis State bedazzled t-shirt for this game, (a friend gave it to me) that’s how confident I am.

Pitt at Virginia

Pick: Pitt

The Panthers seem to have the edge on defense, offense and special teams here. However, this one could be close.

Villanova at Richmond

Pick: Villanova

Nova has been on a winning streak. I just have a feeling about this one.

Eagles at Redskins

Pick: Eagles

I just don’t think the Birds lose this one after last week’s disappointing loss. Honestly, this might just be me being hopeful,  the Skins are on a winning streak and the game is at FedEx but you know I can’t pick the Skins here! This is the true Wentz test. Win- I will welcome him, lose it’s over Rookie.

Manchester at Hermitage

Manchester is the better team, but Hermitage will keep it close at home.

Pick: Manchester

Alabama at Tennessee

Pick: Alabama

A lot of people think Tennessee will keep this game close at home. Alamaba is the most impressive team in college football, in my opinion, and will build a double-digit lead by halftime.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Syracuse

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

I expect a lot of points to be scored in this one and think the 4-1 Hokies will prevail on the road.

Ole Miss @ Arkansas

Pick: Ole Miss

If you’re a betting man (or woman), Arkansas getting 7 points at home is intriguing. But there’s a reason the Rebels are touchdown favorites on the road and should come away with the W.

Ohio State at Wisconsin

Pick: Ohio State

I don’t expect Ohio State to lose until they meet Alabama in the Championship Game.

Pitt at Virginia

Pick: Pitt

Some of my colleagues like UVA to pull off the upset at home, but my gut is telling me the Panthers will pull this one out.

Villanova at Richmond

Pick: Richmond

Richmond is on a roll of late. They’ll keep the momentum going at home this week against a tough Villanova team.

Eagles at Redskins

Pick: Eagles

The skins are on a three-game winning streak, but I think their 3-game home stand gets off to a rough start.

tracey-smith-web-2Tracey Smith, 8News Reporter (Last week – 5-3, Overall – 23-17)

Manchester at Hermitage

Pick: Manchester

I picked them last time and they won, so here’s so a second time.

Alabama at Tennessee

Pick: Alabama

Roll Tide always. I don’t bet against Bama unless I have to.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Syracuse

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

Let’s see if the Hokies can pull out a win for me.

Ole Miss @ Arkansas

Pick: Ole Miss

I’m getting worse and worse with giving reasons why, I just like Ole Miss here.

Ohio State at Wisconsin

Pick: Ohio State

I try to avoid picking against Ohio St.

Pitt at Virginia

Pick: Virginia

I’m hoping to the Cavaliers can pull out a win for me.

Villanova at Richmond

Pick: Villanova

I haven’t bet against Richmond in a while, but I’m thinking this could be an upset.

Eagles at Redskins

Pick: Eagles

Don’t tell my dad, but I think the Eagles will take this one.

MitchMitch Carr, 8Sports Director (Last week – 8-0, Overall – 26-14)

Manchester at Hermitage

Pick: Manchester

“Seniority sucks…if you ain’t a senior.” Hermitage has reloaded but still has young, unproven players. Manchester is full of experience. I’ll take the Lancers.

Alabama at Tennessee

Pick: Alabama

“You come at the king, you best not miss.” Arkansas tied that and got jacked up for its effort. Tennessee proved its luck has run out last week.

Virginia Tech Hokies @ Syracuse

Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

“The game is the same. Just got more fierce.” VT blew out UNC on the road in the rain last week and for once the turnover shoe was on the other foot. This week it gets worse for Tech’s opponent.

Ole Miss @ Arkansas

Pick: Ole Miss

“It’s all about self-preservation, Jimmy. Something you never learned.” The Rebels will preserve their status as second best team in the SEC west.

Ohio State at Wisconsin

Pick: Ohio State

“The king stay the king.” Ohio State is the only Big 10 team with a national title since the BCS/playoff era began. They’re the conference’s gold standard. Wisconsin struggled with Georgia State.

Pitt at Virginia

Pick: Pitt

“You cannot lose if you do not play.” The ‘Hoos were off last week, and that’s the only reason they remain 1-0 in the ACC. James Conner and the Pitt D spell doom for UVA.

Villanova at Richmond

Pick: Villanova

“How you expect to run with the wolves come night, when you spend all day sparring wit’ the puppies?” Richmond has suffered major injuries nearly every week this year. There is now too much youth playing big minutes to beat a team like Villanova.

Eagles at Redskins

Pick: Eagles

“And it hit me… This is what makes a good night on my watch: absence of a negative.” The ‘Skins got a win Sunday over the Ravens mainly because of the absence of a negative, not anything positive. This week: lots of negatives.

This season has been a dumpster fire for me in terms of picks. So, no explanations; just picking to try and gain ground.
