New research finds possible link between hormonal birth control and depression

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Hormonal birth control like the pill, Depo Provera or long-acting, reversible contraceptives, may make women more susceptible to depression, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark found the use of hormonal birth control to be connected with higher rate of diagnosis of depression and the use of anti-depressants, compared to women who do not use that type of contraception.

According to the National Center for Statistics, about one in four American women between the ages of 15 and 44 use hormonal birth control.

The researchers did say this link doesn’t imply that hormonal birth control by itself causes depression.
