RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Hermitage trailed Deep Run 7-0 midway through the first quarter Friday, but Woody Winborn’s team tied the game before he even hit the field. A kickoff return for a touchdown set the score even again, and then the former wide receiver now quarterbacking the #5 Hermitage Panthers went to work.
Winborn tortured the Wildcats to the tune of 12/23 passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns in the air and 12 rushes for 130 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground. Winborn’s four touchdowns game back-to-back-to-back-to-back as the Panthers scored 42 straight points after Deep Run’s early score.
Winborn was a slot receiver in 2015, catching passes from senior QB Eli Odom. Head Coach Patrick Kane said Winborn took snaps at quarterback and got some snaps in games that were out of hand (of which there were many for Hermitage in 2015), so he felt confident that Winborn would be able to handle the job full time.
Winborn said that as a quarterback he prefers to throw before running the ball, but that he’s always ready to run.
