RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Thousands of people were in attendance yesterday and today for the annual Richmond Folk Festival.
The event attracted people from near and far to hear great music from a variety of traditions and cultures live on Brown’s Island and the surrounding area.
One attendee named Allen Wimett described his experience at the Folk Fest.
“It’s just the greatest event of the year for us,” Wimett said.
For 12 years the Wimettes have been coming out to enjoy all the sights and sounds of Richmond’s Folk Festival.
“We really do love the music and we map out where we’re going to go,” Wimett said. “We like funk and blues and dance music, so we hang out in the pavilion a lot. We’re going to see gospel next.”
Every year the Richmond Folk Festival draws huge crowds from across the country – like the Sharones from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
I really love the diversity of Virginia anyways, but then you add to it the diversity of the music that you bring up, we’re amazed,” Tina Sharone said. “We’re now fans of new music. We’re going to go watch zydeco right now.”
The rain was actually a good thing, according to some folk fest fans:
“Actually it’s great because we get to move around without a lot of crowds,” Wimett said.
