Police identify woman who died after being shot in car near Gilpin Court in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — According to police sources, a woman was shot and killed Sunday afternoon near Gilpin Court in Richmond.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. when the victim was shot while sitting in a parked car near the intersection of St. James Street and East Hill Street.

When officers arrived, they found Carmella D. Winston, 52,  of Henrico suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

She was transported to VCU Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of her death.

“A woman riding in a car on a bright Sunday afternoon was struck down by what appears to be random gunfire,” said Major Crimes Captain James Laino. “We need anyone with information about this tragic incident to come forward.”
