RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — VCU is hosting a program to provide free health and dental screenings for more than 100 kids with developmental disabilities.
‘Medfest’ offers kids a free physical and dental exam and allows them to participate in Special Olympics. VCU has hosted it for the last five years at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond.
Experts say kids with disabilities often do not get exams beyond what is required, so they miss out on other activities.
“Oftentimes children who have intellectual or developmental disabilities have difficulty obtaining health care,” Residency Program Director Suzanne Lavoie explained. “They may be disenfranchised from other sporting events, so Special Olympics is incredibly important.”
