Longwood University excited for ‘tremendous opportunity’ to host VP debate

FARMVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — All eyes are on Central Virginia this week as vice presidential candidates Tim Kaine and Mike Pence will square off for their only debate Tuesday night at Longwood University.

With final preparations underway, Longwood is embracing its spot in the international spotlight with more than 2,000 members of the media expected to be in attendance.

81f1583918bd4789b10833e45f55508eLongwood was one of 100 universities that threw its hat in the ring to host the year’s only vice presidential debate. That number dwindled down to 16 and then to four before the Lancers received the final nod.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity to share our story,” Longwood Chief of Staff Justin Pope told 8News. “We’ve been here for a long time, one of the 100 oldest colleges and universities, but we’re not as well known as we ought to be beyond Central Virginia.”
