“Deepwater Horizon” takes moviegoers out into the Gulf of Mexico back in 2010 when the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig exploded. It lead to one of the worst oil spills in history. Based on a New York times article about the disaster, Mark Wahlberg stars as the rig’s I-T guy who worked to rescue his coworkers after the accident. The drama, with lots of action sequences, co-stars Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson and John Malkovich. It’s rated PG-13.
“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is taking flight at the theaters this weekend. Based on the best-selling book, Asa Butterfield stars as Jake. He’s the boy who discovers the residents of Miss Peregrine’s orphanage have some unusual powers. They are hiding from the shadowy tentacled creatures that are hunting them. Directed by Tim Burton, the film co-stars Samuel L Jackson, Judi Dench and Terrance Stamp. It’s rated PG-13.
“Queen of Katwe” is the true story of a young girl living in poverty in Uganda. After she is taught chess by a missionary, played by David Oyelowo, and shows some promise in the game, her life changes for the better. The drama co-stars Lupita N’yongo and Madina Nalwanga. It’s rated PG.
“Masterminds” is the story of an inept armored truck driver, played by Zach Galifinakas, who is lured into a heist. Kristin Wiig is his partner who has figured out a way to make off with some of the millions they move around each and every day. Based on a true story, the comedy costars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis. It’s rated PG-13.
