Fort Lee staff sergeant ‘honored’ to sing national anthem for president, millions at home

FORT LEE, Va. (WRIC) — During Wednesday night’s town hall meeting held at Fort Lee, a staff sergeant sang the national anthem in front of the president plus millions more watching at home.

Sergeant Tierra Brown didn’t learn she would be asked to sing until only the day before, telling 8News she could not turn down the opportunity. Sgt. Brown said she was overcome by nerves when she first got the news.

When her moment finally came on Wednesday, Sgt. Brown nailed her performance of the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’

“It’s the greatest song, in my opinion,” Sgt. Brown said. “So it’s an honor and my pleasure.”

President Obama is the first sitting president to visit Fort Lee. In 2017,  the installation will celebrate its 100th year.
