UR students gather to watch much-anticipated presidential debate

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — University of Richmond students on both sides of the political spectrum gathered Monday night to watch the first presidential debate of 2016 together.

It was standing room only at the Westhampton Center ,but the students 8News spoke with said the packed crowd came as no surprise.

101731a2e9b94e52a603ad12aba120ba“It’s been something that’s held at Richmond for a long time and it doesn’t surprise us to have this many kids out here,” junior Inder Gunnala told 8News Reporter Tracey Smith.

For many students, this is the first presidential election they are able to vote in.

“I think it kind of speaks volumes to how integral this election is,” junior Harleen Bal said.

Students said it is also who is debating that attracts the crowd.

“We haven’t gotten them together in a room yet, or we haven’t seen them in a room together yet interacting like this,” Gunnala added. “We have only seen them on their primary platforms at their campaign events and speaking to their own people.”

374f36a90af24bf393b0f4cf4701a57fAs far as first impressions go, students said the debate was a bit of what they expected.

“Of course, sometimes it seems like both candidates are beating around the bush and not really directly answering the question,” Bal explained. “There are some personal attracts, this isn’t just a policy debate obviously”

Students said they are also looking forward to the tone that will be set for future debates.
