EVANS, Ga. (WJBF) — One of our viewers used her smartphone to record a Columbia County deputy in the midst of a good deed Monday morning.
JimmiLove Gates was driving home when she saw something that inspired her.
“And I notice a Columbia County police officer off of the side of the road with a young lady, and I passed them by. And decided to U-turn to go back and take a look because I noticed a beautiful gesture of kindness on behalf of the officer,” she said. “Everybody’s posting all this stuff… but this is the stuff that people don’t see.”
Gates said he didn’t pay her much mind as she recorded.
“His focus was on helping her get that tire fixed. And that was even more impressive,” she said.
We identified that deputy, Adam Fuller, by his car number. He said helping people with car troubles is just a part of his job.
“It’s an everyday thing. It’s just another thing that we do…helping people out,” Deputy Fuller said. “We’re trained from day one… if we see a vehicle on the side of the road that’s possibly broken down or there’s something wrong with it, we’ll stop, see what the problem is…see if we can help out with it.”
Police do a lot more than just fighting crime.
“He was down in the dirt getting this done for her,” Gates said. “You know, genuinely trying to help her.”
Gates says she thinks we need to be more appreciative of the little things officers do for the community.
“And my view, with so much tension going on now, an awesome act of kindness on behalf of our officers in Columbia County who we love…we love our men in blue,” she said.
The feeling’s mutual.
“The community around here…we love,” Deputy Fuller said. “They support us so much.”
Columbia County deputies say they’ve gotten enormous support from the community they serve. They’ve received cards, goody bags, and even treats for their K-9’s.
