Colonial Heights man charged with neglect after child found wandering in street

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — A Colonial Heights man is in custody after his toddler son was found wandering in the middle of the street Thursday afternoon.

According to police, two drivers spotted the child at roughly 1:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Dupuy Avenue. A detective with the Colonial Heights Police Department saw the two cars and stopped to investigate.

Police say the child’s father works overnight and was asleep inside the home when the toddler wandered off. Another child was also in the house at the time.

The father, Joseph D. Johnson, Sr., was taken to Riverside Regional Jail and charged with felony child neglect.
