Stafford County teen charged with DUI after accidentally driving car into lake

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two Stafford County teenagers are OK after police say one of them accidentally drove a vehicle into a local lake.

At roughly 7 p.m. on Monday, September 20, deputies were called to a water rescue at Hidden Lake Subdivision in western Stafford County.

Police say two juvenile males had been consuming alcohol at the lake and that one of them, a 16-year-old high school student, attempted to drive a vehicle away but put the car into reverse instead of drive. Both teens managed to exit the vehicle unharmed.

When police arrived, they found the vehicle semi-submerged roughly 25 feet from shore. The juvenile who was operating the vehicle was given a field sobriety test, which he subsequently failed, and charged with DUI.

He was released into the custody of his parents, however after they returned home, police say the teen became violent and threatened suicide. He was then transported to Mary Washington Hospital for further evaluation.
