RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – A Richmond man is battling for his life after being shot on Richmond’s south side Tuesday afternoon. The incident happened around 4pm in a shopping center parking lot at Jahnke and Blakemore roads.
The victim was shot near a black sedan at the south end of the shopping center. Eyewitnesses said they saw two men rounding the corner of the building before they opened fire. Other witnesses reported hearing at least 7 shots fired before the crime scene unfolded.
According to police, the two suspects were seen running from the scene, possibly fleeing in a car. First responders found the victim across the street at a Shell gas station.
Neighbors were shaken by the violence that broke out less than a block away from Lucille Brown Middle School.
“The school’s right across the street from here,” a customer at a nearby drycleaner said emphatically, asking not to be identified. “Two minutes away from my house and I see all these police cars in my neighborhood.”
Police are tracking down leads in the investigation, briefly causing major delays Tuesday evening on I-195 after pulling over a suspicious car near Broad Street in connection to the shooting. Investigators did not answer when asked whether anyone was arrested.
