21-year-old man dies after being shot in Hopewell

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — Hopewell Police are investigating their second homicide of the year after a man was fatally shot late Monday evening.

Authorities said at approximately 11:05 p.m., officers responded to the area of Byrd Street and North 21st Avenue for a report of shots being fired in the area.

When officers arrived, they found a black male victim who had died from gunshots wounds.

The victim has been identified as John G. McGowan, 21, of the 300 block of Woodbine Street in Hopewell.

Hopewell Police continues to investigate the shooting and are asking the public if they may know the victim, witnessed the shooting, or may have been traveling in and around the area to contact lead Detective Mike Parsio of the Hopewell Police Department at 804-541-2284.
