COLLEGE PARK, MD. (WRIC) — The Maryland bus driver who saved 20 students from a burning bus is speaking out.
After getting 20 elementary students out safely, 3-year veteran bus driver, Renita Smith, went into her burning bus to save a child.
Smith said she just went into “mommy mode” and needed to protect her babies.
“My biggest reward is my babies are safe because whenever I’m driving any school, they’re my children until I drop them to their biological parents,” Smith said.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire, but they know it started near one of the back wheels.
Firefighters said these kinds of fires are often touched off by defective brakes.
