CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Wednesday morning, first year Cavaliers head coach announced junior Kurt Benkert will be Virginia’s starting quarterback for the 2016 season.
The Wahoos begin the season September 3rd against the Richmond Spiders.
Benkert, a transfer from East Carolina, earned the job by being the one quarterback who produced the most points in practice among the three in contention, Matt Johns who started 12 games in 2015 and senior reserve Connor Brewer.
“Kurt has been the one that I think that has consistently and can continue to be consistent in term of moving our team forward,” said head coach Bronco Mendenhall during a morning press conference, “regardless of the type of caliber of opponent we play.”
Benkert knew he wanted to be the starter when he stepped on campus in Charlottesville.
“I wasn’t going to walk through the door and be like, ‘I’m the guy.'”, Benkert admitted this afternoon after the announcement. “Nobody is going to rally around anyone like that, so I just wanted to come here, I knew my goals but I wanted to work hard and try to blend in with everyone, be a part of the new culture.”
