Passengers struck by gunfire on I-64 west in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police continue to investigate how two passengers in a vehicle were shot on I-64 Monday afternoon near Northampton Boulevard in Norfolk.

The incident happened just a day after a similar incident occurred on I-95 south in Richmond.

Norfolk Police dispatch confirms the initial call just before 3:30 p.m. came in as two gunshot victims on I-64 east of Northampton Boulevard.

When State Police troopers arrived on scene, a man and woman in the back seat of a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado were suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where they are expected to recover from their injuries.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was called to assist in the investigation. They determined the Silverado, which was pulling a boat trailer, was merging onto I-64 from I-264 when the passengers were struck by a bullet. It is still unknown who fired the shot.

Video from Media General affiliate WAVY shows a bullet hole in the passenger door behind the driver.

Officers remain on scene searching for evidence.
