Petersburg late paying trash bill, leaving residents in a smelly situation

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Delveccio Ruffin is a Petersburg barber who knows his craft well.

Ruffin also knows the importance of paying bills on time. As a result, he wonders why Petersburg is behind in paying its trash bills.

“They already have problems with the city officials with other bills [not] being paid, so why should residents suffer for what they’re doing? It’s crazy,” Ruffin said.

barberAccording to Central Virginia Waste Management Authority, the city of Petersburg has not paid a bill since May.

“The city is currently past due on their payments to us for their trash and recycling services so we’re at a point where we can’t sustain this any longer,” said Kimberly Hynes with CVWMA.

According to Hynes, Petersburg owes the waste company more than $600 thousand. The CVWMA delivered a letter to Petersburg and state officials about the debt.

“Why should residents suffer for what they’re doing? It’s crazy,” Delveccio Ruffin said.

Hynes is hoping the city will begin to make some payments.”We’re just asking the city to at least pay a current invoice and provide us with a plan to become current on their bills,” said Hynes.  She added that it is up to the board to determine what the next step the agency will take. The board meets Friday.

Petersburg released the following statement:

“The City of Petersburg is aware of the delinquent payments owed to the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority. Our City has been battling with long-term financial mismanagement for far too long. Current City Management is working very hard to stabilize the City finances and the mounting debt, that has been building since 2012. As weekly communications have occurred with CVWMA, the City will continue to work with the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority to bring this account current. “
