New Enon Elementary School to be built at current site

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Enon Elementary School was built in 1928. While the current building has been falling apart, figuring out where to put a new school has been a challenge for Chesterfield County.

Most people in the community hoped a new school could be built at the current location.

“It’s very family oriented, very community oriented, that’s what I loved about it and it’s one of the reasons I decided to move here,” said parent Jennifer James, who moved across the street from the school. “It enabled me to be an involved parent and participate in activities and things like that.”

The county says it will move forward with building a new school at the current site because of the strong community support to have it there.

“When you go there, it’s not a school, it’s home,” said resident Ida Edens.

Edens says the school has been a staple for the community and a huge part of her life.

“My children went there, my grandchildren are going there,” Edens said.

Originally, officials did not believe building a new school would be possible without using eminent domain, but at the direction of the new superintendent plans were reexamined and adjusted so the school could be built without using eminent domain as an option. The community says the location and the staff are what make the school so special.

“It’s all about the children, and their values and priorities and what’s really important in life,” Edens said.

The community of Enon Elementary has been invited to meet from 6:30-8 p.m. on Aug. 15 in the school’s library (2001 E. Hundred Road) and help decide how the new school building will look. Community members will see the school design, review options for how the exterior of their school might look and vote on the façade they prefer during this meeting.

The new Enon Elementary School is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018.
