RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Space, that final frontier, is not a friendly place for the Starship Enterprise in “Star Trek Beyond.”
The crew answers a distress call that’s a trap leading to the destruction of the enterprise.
Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhuru, Sulu and Chekov, played by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoey Saldana, John Cho and the late Anton Yelchin, all end up stranded on a harsh alien planet run by a warlord played by Idris Elba.
Scotty finds a friend in an alien scavenger played by Sofia Boutella. They cobble together a plan to try and escape the planet.
“Star Trek Beyond” doesn’t quite hit the same orbit as the 2009 reboot, but it soars much higher than 2013’s clunky “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
Co-written by star Simon Pegg (who is clearly a fan of the Trek universe) the script is loaded with action, space battles, and homages to the original tv series.
In fact, this movie is pretty faithful to the plot styles of the best of the 1960’s TV episodes. Idris Elba could have used more screen time and the finale on the eye-popping space station could have been a little longer.
All in all, this one is a blast. It earns a B+.
