UVA has yet another QB competition on its hands

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia Cavaliers have faced a similar dilemma in each of the last three season, who is going to take the snaps for the Hoos on gameday?

Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall is making it clear the starting quarterback job must be earned. Incumbent Matt Johns, who started 12 games last season for the Cavs, is up against fellow senior Connor Brewer and East Carolina transfer Kurt Benkert.

Brewer had a strong spring to force himself into the equation and Benkert was tabbed the starting quarterback for the Pirates in 2015 under then head coach Ruffin McNeill, now defensive coordinator at UVA, before a knee injury ended his season before it started that year for ECU.
