RPS holds rally to prepare kids to go back to school

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Public Schools held their annual back to school rally at Martin Luther King Junior Middle School Saturday afternoon.

Students got backpacks filled with free school supplies. Teachers won prizes and stocked up on supplies too.

Workshops were held for parents to talk about bullying and effective use of social media.

School Board representatives say it’s a blessing that they can do this for their students.

“Our children need to be prepared on the first day of school with supplies,” Shonda Harris-Muhammed, of the School Board’s sixth district, said. “We have children who don’t come to school because they don’t have anything to come to school with.”

There were also free haircuts and health screenings for students.
