RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — It’s been five years since a helicopter carrying 38 troops was shot down in Afghanistan. Most of the soldiers who died that day were Navy Seals.
Today, all Navy Seals and Special Operations troops were honored in a ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial.
John Bellamy, a retired navy seal, spoke at the event.
“This is a very proud and humble occasion to be at,” Bellamy said. “We had 11 guys start out class in 1962 and 38 of us made it.”
The shooting down of the helicopter was the single worst loss of US troops since the conflict in Afghanistan began in 2001.
