Flames rip through historic church in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) — Flames did extensive damage to the church rectory at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood. It started around 4:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.

D7BB4FD0AB8046C3BE5CE084FF9F9537Father Gino Rossi said the fire was started by contractors trying to repair the roof.

“The whole house is gutted,” he told 8News Reporter Jonathan Costen. “All the walls are like just soaked, the whole roof is gone, all the lights … It’s in bad shape. It looks like a tornado has gone through.”

Fortunately, the main portion of the church was spared, but the rectory where the church’s two priests stay had extensive damage.

” It means I’m going to be sleeping on my sister’s couch,” Father Rossi said. “She lives on the northside and the other priest will be staying with his folks; they live not too far away.”

The priest said people are asking him what they could do to help. Rossi said they could pray for the church and remember mass will still take place this weekend.
