Ashland Independence Day parade led by town’s UPS man

ASHLAND, Va. (WRIC)– A special grand marshall led the Ashland Independence Day parade.

Vern McMillan doesn’t live in town, but people say he’s made his mark there. Vern is Ashland’s long-time UPS delivery man.

So when event organizers asked who should lead the parade, they say Vern was a popular choice.

“Everybody mentioned Vern’s name, so that exemplified how much this town totally loves him,” explains Paige Christy.

His chuckle is contagious. It’s a deep belly laugh that can bring a smile to someone having a not so happy day.

“They see the UPS truck pull up and we know that Vern is going to come in and give us a big smile, a laugh, a hug if we need one,” explains Ashland resident John Working, ” And those are small things, but they go a long long way.”

“When you see him you just wave and he chuckles. He just brightens everyone’s day,” adds another Ashland resident Jessica Robertson.

Fans sported “Feel the Vern” signs along the parade route.

Ashland residents believe this was a great opportunity to give back to a man they rely on for more than just packages.

A humble Vern replied, “That means a lot.” And then he chuckled.
