FAIRFAX, Va. (WRIC) — From Radford to Newport News, several Central Virginia high school teams played for VHSL state championships Saturday. In Fairfax County, Atlee Softball repeated as 5A Champions with a 5-0 win over Hickory. The Godwin girls’ soccer team needed overtime but beat Tuscarora 4-3 thanks to a hat trick from Paige Franks. The Eagles lost in last year’s title game, but that is now a distant memory.
In boys lacrosse, the Atlee Raiders tied Briar Woods with 30 seconds to play in regulation to force overtime. The Raiders had a couple of close shots in OT, but Briar Woods eventually scored the sudden-death game winner to defeat Atlee 9-8. James River was no match for James Robinson in the 6A boys’ final.
The Hanover Hawks are once again 4A Baseball State Champions after defeating Liberty Christian in Lynchburg. The Hawks led 7-1 but gave up eight runs to trail 9-7. Hanover then took the lead back at 11-9 and eventually added two more runs to take a 13-9 lead. In the final inning, Hanover held off the Bulldogs to win it 13-12. In 2A, Goochland scored first on Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, but the Green Dragons scored the final three runs of the game. Maggie Walker won the 2A Baseball State Championship 3-1.\
In tennis, Deep Run’s girls’ tennis team won the first state championship in program history in Newport News. Midlothian’s girls’ tennis team captured a state championship, beating Hanover 5-0, and Maggie Walker’s boys’ tennis team won the 2A State Championship with a 6-0 win over Wilson Memorial.
