RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A Henrico County resident started a petition urging the county not to continue with their plan to cut down trees in order to build 130 townhomes.

The plan would clear wooded land near the SunTrust building at 7817 E. Parham Road, east of its intersection with West Broad Street.

The petition has over 12,900 signatures.

Alexandra Matthews, an 18-year-old Rutgers University student, started the petition.

“I am a resident of this county and the area is right behind my townhouse complex,” Matthews said. “I advocate for the welfare of the environment, so seeing deforestation happening so close to home prompted me to act.”

Matthews said she’s been to two Board of Supervisors meeting to protest the plan but was “dismissed.”

The project is being completed by the Virginia Beach-based developer Kotarides Builders and would affect over 31 acres.
