MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — One of our 8News viewers sent us pictures of a bear in her backyard.
Lisa Watkins snapped pictures of a black bear in her backyard on Travellers Way, not far from Mechanicsville Turnpike.
She said she was shocked to see the bear in her backyard.
“I looked out the window and at first, it was like, ‘ok, do I live at Maymont?’ You know, it’s not your typical thing to see… a black bear in Mechanicsville,” Watkins said.
A neighbor told Watkins a bear was loose in the neighborhood. She says she got her son and two dogs in just in time.
“He came from right directly behind me, through the woods,” Watkins explained. “Came over here to our backyard fence and just decided he would investigate the backyard.”
This is not the first recent appearance of a bear roaming around a neighborhood. A few weeks ago a bear was seen in Ashland and another in Chesterfield.
Wildlife officials say it’s not unusual for bears to be out this time of year.
Watkins says the bear hopped the fence and was just checking out the area.
“I mean it was cool, but a little bit scary at the same time,” Watkins admitted.
