RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, many look to have fun in the water, especially in the James River.
The river can be a very inviting place, but all the fun could quickly turn into a dangerous emergency situation. Due to all the recent rains, the water levels are higher than usual.
But emergency crews are taking extra precautions and continuing to warn people about water safety.
They say to swim with a buddy, never mix alcohol with swimming activities, and in some cases, use a life jacket because the water could potentially get rough.
“We recommend you having an improved life jacket whenever levels are above five feet,” Lt. Chris Armstrong said.
The Richmond Fire Department and Emergency Services will operate a two-person bike team on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
