8News at the Box Office: Will the X-Men win the holiday weekend?

(WRIC) — Captain America is getting some superhero competition at the theaters this weekend from the X-Men!

The mutants are back and facing their biggest foe yet in “X-men Apocalypse.” Oscar Isaac stars as the ancient mutant who has awakened from his slumber and decided to take over the world. Mystique, played again Jennifer Lawrence, is leading the charge to stop him. Will the world survive the  all out battle? The film, costarring James Macavoy, Olivia Munn and Rose Byrne,  is rated “Pg-13.”

Alice is back for another trip to Underland in “Alice Through the Looking Glass.” This time around Alice, played again by Mia Wasikowski, is searching for the Mad Hatters family in hopes of rescuing him from the evil queen. Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sasha Baron Cohen and Anne Hathaway costar. The film is rated “PG 13.”

“A Bigger Splash” stars Ralph Fiennes as a record producer who is looking rekindle the flames with a lost love.   Played by Tilda Swinton, she is on vacation in the Mediterranean with her current lover. Worlds collide and hearts will be broken. The erotic comedy, co-starring Dakota Johnson, is rated “R.”

X-men Apocalypse is expected to win the holiday weekend. Experts say it could make 100 million dollars over Memorial Day Weekend.
