HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Henrico County recently renamed Harry F. Byrd Middle School to Quioccasin Middle School, but that’s not the only change happening on campus.

Recently, students voted to replace the school’s “Senators” mascot nickname with the “Griffins.”

The students chose the name as a way to commemorate Neil Griffin, the school’s popular former school resource officer who died earlier this year.

“The vote shows how important Officer Griffin was to our school community,” Principal Cheri Guempel said in a release. “The vote is about unity and moving forward.”

The first online suggestion poll for the new mascot was open to anyone, but the final vote was limited to current and rising students as well as faculty and staff members.

The top three suggestions were Griffins, Bulls and Cougars.“Griffins” won with more than 50 percent of the final vote.

The new name and nickname will appear this summer at the school.
