ASHLAND, Va.(WRIC) — Ashland police officers say a bear was wandering through a residential area Thursday, and an 8News viewer managed to catch the creature on video.

Several reports indicate the bear may have been in the area between Route 1 South Washington highway and Maple Street, as well as the Slash Cottage area.

Officers are continuously looking for the bear and are in contact with Hanover Animal Control. Police are asking if anyone see’s or comes in contact with the bear to please remember to keep your distance and give the animal plenty of space.

Retired game warden Joe Cooke says the bear is more scared of human than we are of it.

Anyone who contacts the bear is asked to contact police.
