Police identify man found shot to death in car on Jeff Davis Highway

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Police are investigating a fatal shooting on Jefferson Davis Highway Tuesday night.

Police say they responded to 701 Jeff Davis Highway at roughly 7:45 p.m. for reports of multiple shots fired. When they arrived, they found an adult male dead inside a vehicle. He’d been shot multiple times.

Police identified the victim as 29-year-old Travis Antoine Horton, of the 3300 block of Meadowdale Boulevard.

Authorities had previously identified the victim as Travis Antonio Horton. They sent a correction out shortly after the release of the identity.

Police do not have a suspect in custody at this time. They are investigating this incident as a homicide — the city’s 23rd this year. That’s nearly three times the amount of murders the city had this time last year.

“This violence has to stop,” Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham said at the scene. “Family members, friends … Everybody is out here and they’re grieving on the street corner. Behind yellow tape and it’s unfair to them, it’s unfair to the community, to the family members and it’s unfair to the individual who lost his life. At the hands of violence.”

Detectives know there were several people in the area at the time who may have witnessed the shooting and, while they have good leads in this case, they ask those people to call Major Crimes Detective Anthony Coates at 804 646-0729 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens can also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Submit tips to GUN250 about persons in possession of illegally-held guns by texting Crime Stoppers at 274637, then using keyword “GUN250” followed by your tip. Rewards up to $250. All the Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
