Richmond, Va (WRIC) — Some Richmond residents are hoping for speed limit changes along Semmes Avenue.
City Council is expected to vote and approve a speed limit reduction along Semmes Avenue between West 22nd Street and Forest Hill Avenue during a Monday night meeting at City Hall.
Longtime resident and owner of Crossroads Coffee & Ice Cream Will Herring said cars speeding through the area has been an issue for years.
“In 14 years of me being here I’ve seen accidents up and down the streets,” Herring said.
The Richmond Police Department reports 18 accidents in the area in the past year.
Herring said even after the city increased speeding fines to $200 last year, drivers continue to zip down Semmes avenue.
“I think people forget that there’s people living their lives on the corridor and they’re in too much of a hurry going by,” Herring said. “They’ve done studies that show speeding in the City doesn’t get you anywhere faster so just slow it down and the life you save might be your own.”
