Superintendent of Schools responds after deadly Hanover crash

HANOVER COUNTY, Va (WRIC)– The Superintendent of Schools responds to a crash that left two dead and four others seriously injured Saturday night in Mechanicsville.

Shortly after 10:30 pm Saturday night, deputies responded to the 6000 block of Cold Harbor Road for a single-vehicle automobile crash.

Investigators determined that a 2001 4-door Dodge Ram pick-up truck was traveling east on Cold Harbor Road when it left the roadway and struck a tree. As a result of this crash, two passengers, Dylan Ballard, 17, and Elliott Hinton, 22, both from Mechanicsville, were pronounced dead at the scene. Police tell us that Ballard was a senior at Lee-Davis High School.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Michael Gill released a statement Sunday afternoon.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the tragic deaths of Dylan Ballard and Elliott Hinton, and we extend our deepest sympathy to their family and friends, Dr. Gill said.  “We will continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers, along with the remaining individuals who were seriously injured in this crash.  In addition, extra support will be provided to students as they return to school on Monday and begin dealing with this incredibly tragic situation.”

The driver and three additional passengers were seriously injured and transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment.
