SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Thousands of children and teens are hurt every year from falling out of windows, and on Friday we were reminded how quickly a child can get in trouble.
It’s a preventable tragedy, but it continues to happen when the weather warms up; kids falling out of windows. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries for all children under 19-years-old.
On Friday, an 18-month-old boy was rushed to the hospital after falling from a second-floor porch in Springfield. He’ll be okay.
Dr. Ronald Gross of Baystate Medical Center told 22News, “Screens on windows are not a prevention; window bars are the only prevention if you’re going to have your windows open.”
Window falls can cause serious injuries, yet they can be prevented. Dr. Gross recommends parents safeguard their children by using window guards. He said that’s the safest and the most efficient way to protect your children.
It’s an inexpensive device that will protect your child from falling out a window. For under $40 you can prevent a tragedy. Window guards can be purchased at your local hardware store. They’re adjustable and can expand to fit your window.
Paul Mahar of Chicopee said he remembers how his parents safeguarded their home; “My parents use to open the top part of the window, instead of the bottom. I think opening the top of the window, if you have small kids, and you’re in an apartment building.”
Children are quick; so remember, young children require constant supervision to stay safe. Another way to keep kids safe is to keep furniture, or other items kids could climb up, on away from windows.
