Fans pay tribute to Prince at the Ashland Theater

ASHLAND, Va (WRIC) — Hundreds of people headed to the Ashland Theater to pay tribute to a music icon on Saturday.

The Ashland Theater quickly turned into a sea of purple as 336 Prince fans came to view a free screening of “Purple Rain.”

Lauren Gwaley, a theater volunteer, said they received a lot of request for tickets.

“We can’t call it sold out when it’s free but we had a waiting list for people to get in,” Gwaley said.   “We were able to grant all those seats.”

Since Prince’s passing Thursday at his home in Minnesota, many Virginians mourn the 57-year-old’s death but celebrate his unique and electric talent.

The audience erupted into cheers as the movie began.  They wanted to show their love for the man they say is one of the best artist who ever lived.
