UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team held off a fiery rally from Liberty late for a 10-9 victory Wednesday afternoon at Pitt Field.
This was the first time the Spiders have defeated the Flames in the last six meetings.
Michael Morman led Richmond at the plate going 3-for-4 with five RBI.
Liberty (20-19) looked to get things started early in the second with a leadoff triple, but the Spiders shut down the scoring opportunity.
The Spiders (20-15) scored five runs in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Morman delievered an RBI single to score de Marte before Doug Kraeger drew a bases loaded walk to push across Schmidt. Kurtis Brown blasted a bases clearing double to cap off the inning and give the Spiders a comfortable lead.
In the sixth, the Flames got one across off a sacrifice fly before Will Shepherd hit a two-run homer in the seventh making it a 7-4 ball game.
De Marte sparked a seventh inning outburst with a double to left center that scored Jansen Fraser. Morman came up clutch again with another two-run double to extend Richmond’s lead, 10-4
Liberty would not go quietly as they scored three runs in the top of the ninth, but the Spiders were able to hold on to secure their second straight win, 10-9.
Jacob Lamb, who earned his second win of his career, tossed a career long outing of 7.1 innings. The southpaw scattered nine hits and struck out three. Classmate Matt Olson earned his first collegiate save as he sat down the last batter to secure Richmond’s victory.
Richmond will face crosstown rival, VCU for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 22 at The Diamond.
