Newman’s home run lifts Spiders over Davidson 4-3

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a two-run homer from senior Aaron Newman, the University of Richmond baseball team scratched out a 4-3 victory over Davidson on Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats got out to an early 1-0 lead when Lee Miller knocked in a run. Richmond responded quickly evening the score in the bottom half as Michael Morman slid across the dish off an RBI single from Kyle Adams.

In the third, Miller pushed the ‘Cats second run of the game across, giving the Wildcats a one-run lead before Jake Sidwell’s RBI single in the fourth extended their lead to 3-1.

Newman blasted his first home run of the season over the left field wall giving the Spiders a 4-3 lead, in the sixth.

Davidson continued to threaten, but the Spiders continued to shut down the ‘Cats, holding onto their one-run lead.

Sophomore Keenan Bartlett earned his first win of the year with a seven-inning performance. The right-hander gave up nine hits while registering six strikeouts. Freshmen Caleb Ward took over in relief in the eighth. The rookie allowed just one hit in his appearance and shut down the side in the ninth to secure Richmond’s 4-3 win.

The Spiders will continue the series with Davidson tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
