HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Henrico County is swearing in a new police chief on Friday.
This afternoon, Humberto “Hum” Cardounel Jr. recited the oath of office and was installed as the new Henrico County Police chief.
Cardounel is a Freeman High School graduate who was born and raised in Richmond. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Richmond and a master’s degree in public administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Cardounel has been a part of the Henrico Police Division since 1988, most recently as a major and deputy chief for the Investigative Bureau. He will succeed Douglas A. Middleton, who is stepping down to serve as deputy county manager for public safety.
On Friday morning, Middleton said farewell to his colleagues.
“When you put on the uniform for the last time it leaves an impression on your heart,” he said.
